Health and Saftey

Health and Safety
What does health and safety refer to in film production?

-first aid

-time pressure

-fire exits

-conditions of locations

-insurance

-security

-people in charge

-size of the crew

-safety signage

Who are the key personnel involved in health & safety and what are their roles and responsibilities?
  • The Producer to the Production Manager and 1st Assistant Director to then all crew members have a duty of care which is recognised by the law.
  • The Location Manager is in charge of the reece so that they can make sure the location and safe to work in.
  • The First Assistant Director is in charge of always making sure that production is running safely.
  • The Production Coordinator is in charge of updating and giving out the risk assessments.
What is the key function of risk assessment within health & safety?
A risk assessment makes sure that everyone working is safe and there is no risk of anyone getting hurt. It looks at each set up and location individually and it ensures that the area is completely safe to work in without any complications.

Why are health & safety considerations and risk assessments so important?
They ensure that all deadlines are met and that everyone is safe and if deadlines cannot be met it makes sure that the person carrying out the risk assessments can give an accurate timing of when it will be safe or things they can put in place to carry on with the day.

What are the consequences of not considering health & safety and risk assessments?

The consequences of not taking out a risk assessment is that you could end up putting people in danger. You could also end up wasting time that doesn't need to be wasted, for example it could cause everyone to come in for a full day of shooting for everyone to get there and find out it's too dangerous for people to be on site.

Logistics-locations

Logistics: locations

What is a recce?
A recce is a pre production process, where you visit the location you want to use, before you commit to that as your location.

Whys is a recce an important part of pre production?
A recce is a super important part of pre production because it allows you to make sure you really know that the location is completely what you're looking for, insuring you can research the history, look at budgeting and assess the location.

Location manager and assistant location manager?
  • Understanding the types of location needed by reading from the scripts and storyboards

  • Organisation for the permission for access to their locations

  • Making sure no sound will interrupt the recordings

  • Negotiating the access to the location

  • Dealing with the public around the location who may interrupt the filming process

  • Making sure everything abides by the health and safety rules

What would be the impact of these roles not being filled and not being timescaled efficiently?

The impact of the roles not being filled and not being timescaled efficiently is that it can set back the whole process of filmmaking ect.

What is a skeleton crew?
A skeleton crew is the most essential members of the crew. Such as film crew and lighting crew.

What type of crew does the skeleton crew not include and why?
It does not include the actors or actresses this is because they are classed as cast, as well as cast , directors and producers are not included because they are on set every day and it's their job to select the skeleton crew.

5 essential roles in order to film to standard
  • Hair and makeup
  • Grafter / Grips
  • Director of photography
  • Location audio
  • Production assistants

Each of the five roles need an explanation

Hair and makeup-
-A level of professionalism to the film
-Helping an actor or actress feel more in character

Grafter / Grips-
                            -Person works on the lights
-Helps create a certain mood or feel to the scene whether
that be daylight or an uneasy feel.

Director of Photography-
-Some directors like to film themselves so they the film fits
                            their own vision
Or the “DP” must work very close with the director for the same reason.
Location Audio-
-Sound is over 50% of your film.
-Good sound is so important to have success within your
              film.

Production assistant-
-Must have a good attitude as a result of most “PA’s” wanting
                     to learn.

-They also let makeup artists and DP’s stick to their own job.

Deadlines

 Deadlines

Deadlines are important as they allow timescales to be kept, thus allowing for projects to be completed in the most efficient way, as well as being able to maintain a budget. If deadlines are not kept, consequences can occur especially in terms of time and expenses.

Deadlines include:
Time - deadlines of organizing time schedules for picking people up etc and for the times you have the equipment for.

Facilities- deadlines for the equipment used such as rented cameras that can only be rented for a certain amount of time, after this deadline it needs to be returned .if deadlines are not met here it means the production may need to be changed.

Location-  deadlines for location is that you may only have a permit to hire a location for a certain amount of time and if a deadline is not met it may mean that you would need to choose another location or cancel a part of the film, which is quite likely to affect other parts of production.

Personnel-  deadlines for personnel are quite important because if the cast are not decided within the deadlines then it pushes the hole production back which in turn costs more money.

Materials- deadlines for materials is super important because if you don't have all the materials needed it will set back your production by ages because you don’t have the right things in order to create.

short film Vs feature film

Feature films
Short films

40 mins or less

Independently produced
Lots of details fills the first act
Hardly any detail about characters

Short films are normally made by an independent producers. They are low budget productions made with rented equipment or borrowed equipment from a school for example. They are normally fairly short maximum time being about 40 minutes.

Vs

Feature films are normally made by big production companies such as Walt Disney, Pixar etc. They are very high budget films because of the amount needed to produce a high quality film, such as cameras or lights. They are normally anything from 1 hr 40 mins to 2 hrs 30 mins.
